How to walk like a model | Runway guide for male models

dieselblackgold

So I’ve been working in the modeling industry for almost three years now and I always wanted to write about guides for my new and upcoming models to help them through their first go-sees especially that most of the time they experience it first-hand without any practice or workshop.

Today, I am forced to write tips for male model walking since one of my new model needs it.

Here is a clip from John Robert Powers’ Chita Johnson as she demonstrates the right ways to walk like a model:

Key tips from the video:

  • Keep the feet side-by-side; not overlapping
  • Keep arms up and back as you walk
  • Don’t walk macho
  • Keep good posture
  • Slow down as you make a turn

It is also important that models have an “attitude” on the runway to stand out from other models:

Key tips to having a runway attitude:

  • Pause on your turn
  • Feel confident
  • Give a masculine look

Facial expressions on the runway is also important but it also depends on the designer or brand what they want to achieve for their fashion show. Here are a few tips from expert Chita Johnson:

Key tips on runway facial expressions:

  • Don’t look bored
  • Eyes open and focused
  • Don’t look down or side-to-side
  • Keep the face straight parallel to the floor, just like you have a book on your head

It is very important that you know the image of the designer/brand you’re walking for so you can get the proper facial expression but normally the production will give the models an idea of what the client likes the show to look like during the rehearsals.

Here are some tips from my own observation on watching fashion shows:

  • Observe the pace of walking of other models. You don’t wanna be the fastest or slowest from the group
  • Don’t wobble your head. This is very rare among models and it’s really bad.
  • Don’t look at your friends while they are cheering for you or taking your pictures. This is very unprofessional.
  • Prepare a good pose to highlight the clothing or accessory you are modeling

Here are a few actual runway walks from Top Male Models that you guys can use as examples:

That’s everything I can give you guys. I hope you’ll be able to use those tips above and I can’t wait to see your own walk on the runway!
